SPEAKER_02It's the final week of Statham Tember, and we're concluding things with not only kind of an unexpected Statham movie, but I think that feeling carries on into our new movie review as well.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, we'll be closing out with our final Statham movie pick, Wrath of Man, followed by a special very Stathamy game hosted by one of our favorite comedians and humans, Chelsea Woodmancy. And for our non-statham movie, we'll be checking out the new Resident Evil, which, yeah, is a bit unexpected given all the live-action Resident Evil movies that came before it.
SPEAKER_02Then for TV, we'll be discussing Lanterns episode six, titled Bed Optics.
SPEAKER_06Anyway, let's see what we have in store, I guess.
SPEAKER_12This is we should watch that episode 26.
SPEAKER_09We should watch that.
STATHAMTEMBER Intro
SPEAKER_06Wow, sushi. Just like that, we've reached the grand finale of our inaugural Statham Temper. We've seen the highs of a dead man being used as a snorkel in the transporter. And we've seen the lows of shit-covered orcs in in the name of the king.
SPEAKER_02It could have just been made of the poop as well.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, that's true. I never thought that it was just a complete wow.
SPEAKER_11Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Wow, so you've really opened things up for me. Oh we've watched Statham drive fast, kick hard, take his shirt off for reasons both practical and unclear, and on more than one occasion refuse to elaborate. We've laughed, we've cried. Well, I mean, not really, but in the name of the king did make us want to.
SPEAKER_10Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_06And somewhere along the way, Statham Tember became a part of us. His legacy is now our legacy. His rules are our rules.
SPEAKER_04I suppose.
SPEAKER_06And his rules are, I guess, never change the deal, no games, and never open the package.
SPEAKER_02That's specifically the transporter.
SPEAKER_06Oh, okay. I'll have to clarify with his team. But nonetheless, we still have got one last job to do. So join us in our final celebration. Put on your best black suit, check the oil in your Audi, and prepare to get statomed because we're closing out Staham Tember with Wrath of Man and a very special stay fim game, which you can actually play along at home. Just get a pen and some paper.
STATHAMTEMBER Featured Movie Review & Discussion: Wrath of Man (w/ spoilers)
SPEAKER_06But it has been a good month. And our final Statham Timber movie is Wrath of Man, directed by Guy Richie. And this was actually his fourth movie with his real life buddy Jason Statham. I just kind of love it. These guys genuinely seem to like hanging out and making movies together. This one is actually a remake of a 2004 French movie called Cash Truck. In it, Statham plays H, a mysterious new guy at an armored truck company in LA. One of the trucks was recently robbed. Two guards and a bystander were killed. Then H gets caught in a robbery of his own and handles it uh way too well, considering what his job is. So naturally, everybody's like, okay, who the hell is this guy? Statham is joined by Holt McKelly, Josh Hartnett, Scott Eastwood, Jeffrey Donovan, and Andy Garcia. So basically, Guy Richie just assembled a small army of intimidating men, put Jason Statham in the middle of it, and was like, let's see what happens. So, douche, what did you think of Wrath of Man?
SPEAKER_02Well, first of all, I think they should have just named this movie The League of Intimidating Men or something like that. Probably better than Wrath of Man, really. But yeah, we're really getting a good sampling of Statham movies.
SPEAKER_06A range, yeah, full range.
SPEAKER_02I actually had never seen Wrath of Man previously. I think that was due mostly to the fact that after three Transporter movies and two crank movies, I kind of made it a point to see movies, Statham's, where the premise or his character was unhinged or at least over the top in some kind of way. Which was not what I heard of this movie at the time of its release. Also, personally, I'm not a huge Guy Richie fan. I mostly enjoy his earlier work. So following Snatch, I think I just saw movies of his that specifically also had lead actors I enjoyed.
SPEAKER_06Right. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_02With that said, I really didn't know what to expect with this movie, other than a general assumption that this probably wouldn't end up being one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_02To start off, the first thing I really started feeling once I actually watched this movie was that it seemed to employ the same type of guy richie dialogue I'd come to see. Based on my experience seeing his previous films, typically leans heavy into sarcasm and dry British humor. But in this movie, it just doesn't seem to land anywhere near as well with Americans playing these types of characters as they do with British or European actors. I usually think Holt McAlleny is a pretty good antagonist or shitty cop or government agent type character. But man, this movie I just thought he was super annoying, his bullet, because they just made him way too yappy with the guy Richie dialogue the entire time. It's almost as bad as with Josh Hart in it. Oh my god. I usually enjoy that guy in most movies I've seen him in, and I definitely loved him in Trap. But man, if his character Boy Sled Dave wasn't as unhinged as he ended up being in this movie, I think he might have been as bad as Oh my god. But yeah, oddly though, the cast is kind of stacked. There's a lot of just random action or I guess suspense or drama movie names that we're used to seeing that appear in this. So at least that was the upside of the cast. The next thing, something I was holding on and hoping wasn't going to be the case, was that Statham's character in this movie was pretty void of any sense of humor.
SPEAKER_05Ugh yeah.
SPEAKER_02He's pretty serious, save for a moment, with his son. You know, before the poor kid gets murdered by Scott Eatswood's character, Jan. I mean, not only was it completely unnecessary to have Statham play such a boring character, but this is just really unexpected to me as far as guy richie films with Jason Statham in the cast goes. Do you think that this director that basically discovered the dude and cast him due to his personality would have taken this stuff into consideration?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, true. And also who's yeah, like best friends with him.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So besides what seems like some significant mismatches between the script and the actor's cast for the movie, the writing's also kind of confusing.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Mostly because we're not really provided any context aside from some text telling us when the events we're watching happened across the different acts. Because most of the titles of each of the acts provide little to no context for the events taking place during them. Oh yeah. For the most part, I think I'm pretty good at figuring out most plots that might be somewhat confusing in movies. But I honestly had problems trying to understand everything that happened in this movie. I don't know if it was because of any of the elements I mentioned that I've been critical of so far affecting my attention span. But it ultimately took several glances at the plot synopsis on Wikipedia. Oh my god. Followed by a couple Reddit discussions the day after seeing the movie, before I fully understood everything, or at least enough to ultimately feel like I understood what happened in the movie. Yeah. It's just weird because a lot of elements in this movie, you know, great cast, a seemingly complex story involving a heist that doesn't go right, revenge rooted in the death of a child, nonlinear storytelling, and some other elements. They're all things I typically love in movies. But weirdly, for this movie, just seem to miss so many of those marks. Oh. And it's not like I can absolutely say that I hated this movie because it's not complete trash. Yeah. It just seems miscast and maybe even a bit dark for a story that almost seems perfect for more classic, cheeky British gangster movie treatment that we're more used to from Guy Ritchie than some sort of heist by a team of disgruntled ex-military dudes.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. It's like a poor man's heat or something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's exactly how I was thinking of it. But beyond that, I was just wondering when did Guy Ritchie start getting into this whole military thing? It seemed like within the past decade or so, he started to gravitate towards making these weird special ops type movies, but they're not even like special ops movies that you would think would fall in line with the types of movies he did. They're like very serious, dramatic movies that have these types of military teams attached to them somehow. It's really weird. With that said, let me move on to my rating. I gave this movie a three. Okay. I honestly wanted to give this movie a lower rating, but I think even with Statham's character not being well suited to him in the way we'd expect in a Guy Ritchie movie, he still manages to deliver more or less the same character as some of his more straight man roles.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like I basically see his character in this movie to be as serious as his character in The Beekeeper, but obviously without the deadpan delivery of ridiculous B-related one-liners.
SPEAKER_06Protect the hive.
SPEAKER_02Definitely not a lot of martial arts or hand-to-hand combat stuff in this movie. Pretty much just a lot of gunfire and being bugged from states. I'm not even really as upset as I am disappointed, I guess. Yeah. For the movie, since at face value, at least, I could totally have seen this being a successful film.
SPEAKER_06Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02I really think it just needed the right cast and/or maybe lightening up the script a bit. But I guess that'd be kind of hard with the main character some being murdered as the incident, the entire movie kind of operates.
SPEAKER_06Well, that that happens to face off, too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I think that's more funny because of the camp. I don't know. It's just none of the stuff in this movie was written with any sort of humor in mind, unless you want to consider stuff how crazy and unhinged Josh Hartner's character was. Then maybe. But that's about as silly, I guess, as this movie gets. If you even can say that it gets silly at all. Moving on, my Statham standout moments.
SPEAKER_05Ooh.
SPEAKER_02It's kind of a combo.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. I bet I know what it is.
SPEAKER_02Before he kills Post Malone's character in this movie, and yes, Post Malone is in this movie, but he's not a likable guy in this movie at all, which is very much in conflict with how I see him in general.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Which is pretty chill, pretty cool guy. Anyway, before he kills Post Malone's character, he's pointing a gun at dude, like, who do you work for? And Post Malone's like, suck my fucking dick. And Statham just asks him to repeat what he says. And he does. What he does, Statham's like, suck your own dick. And shoots the team right in the head. Like dead. Yes. But yo, not even 30 seconds later, I fucking timed it even. Holt McAlheny and Josh Hartn had walk in just as Statham is on his way out. Statham looks over at Hartnett and just says, You alright, Dave? Did you make poo-poo?
SPEAKER_05Oh my god.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, babe. Yeah. Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep. That's worth the price of admission.
SPEAKER_02I don't know, man. I don't think that makes up for the entire movie, but man, the I some fantastic lines that I don't know if we would have gotten from any other movie.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. God. Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh, what did you think of uh Wrath of Man?
SPEAKER_06Well, um to be honest, I didn't really like it, but I have to say, for the first 30 minutes or so, I thought I was gonna like it. Like I thought it was.
SPEAKER_02It was one of those movies, right?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, there's uh this incredible dramatic score that's very bombastic.
SPEAKER_02I don't know if I would call it incredible. No, no, I don't know if you can call just randomly creeping in at different times through the movie as being incredible.
SPEAKER_06Yes, but what I'm talking about specifically is the opening score that inspired you to get up and do an interpretive dance. And that was honestly my favorite action sequence in the movie. Then we get these like insane poor man's James Bond looking opening credits, and we were both laughing. I was like, okay, I don't know where the fuck you can do. You know what?
SPEAKER_02It actually didn't remind me of James Bond as much as it reminded me of goddamn, you're gonna kill me for this one. Oh no, the tax collector. Oh it was very tax collector.
SPEAKER_06That is true, that is true. Damn. What a movie.
SPEAKER_02Another unexpected movie, I suppose.
SPEAKER_06I guess. But yeah, it's such a good premise. I was really hoping that that would carry it along. You got Statham at this armored truck company, and you're like, all right, something's up, obviously, because he's Jason Statham. I loved this funny detail where they go out of the way of telling him, in this shooting test, you get below 70, you fail. And he gets exactly 70. And I'm like, okay, movie, I get it. He's got a plan, he's executing it. And oh my god, we get to the depot, and there's just a weird energy there, man, a weird vibe. So you've got Josh Hartnet running around being a little nuts. Everybody has stupid fucking names. Like Hollow Bob.
SPEAKER_02Well, here's the thing. Yeah, I thought about this too, and that was one of the elements that I think would have made sense if it was just Brits and Europeans. It just doesn't work with Americans because Americans don't come up with names like that. Oh my god, unless you're like part of the mafia.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, these all sound like names that could have been in train spotting. Yes, uh, yeah, but I think it's funny. Also, they start calling him Action Man. Action Man. All right, then Mary Poppins, and I'm like, this workplace is weird. And then, yeah, just like you were saying, Sush, the guy Richie writing for Americans thing is nuts. We experienced this a bit with in the gray, but I think it's worse here.
SPEAKER_02It's totally worse here because at least um Jake Gyllenhall can talk.
SPEAKER_06They can sell a line.
SPEAKER_02No, like he can yap. That's what I mean. So it works with him a little bit, but none of the Americans that they got for this shit really yap.
SPEAKER_06You have to have a very intense vibe to carry out this kind of dialogue as an American. Yeah, and yeah, I think it's so funny because they're working class American armored truck drivers and they're all talking like a cockney dandy. Bullet says, I spy with my little eye that I smell fear, and then someone else responds, that doesn't make any sense. And I'm like, Yeah, why'd you write it? It's so crazy. At one point, Bullock describes uh Jason Statham going grocery shopping. It's complicated, but he calls Statham a paragon of modern man on a wild sojourn.
SPEAKER_02Who wrote this? Oh, we know.
SPEAKER_06A working class guy with a flat top is saying nobody talks like that in America, man. No, it's so bizarre because also the one person who can not just carry off but sell this dialogue is Jason Statham, and he barely talks. It's all these other yappers. But I will say, yeah, to your point, I also have got to talk about his two amazing lines. Suck your own dick, shoot someone in the head, did you make a poo-poo? That progression is why we celebrate Statham Tember, because this man can do both. He can do suck your own dick, he can do did you make a poo-poo. He is well, I'm not gonna say he's versatile, but within a 30-second window and it works. Within a 30-second window, yes.
SPEAKER_02I'm not saying it's his best work, but I'm saying it it still works.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it does, but it is such a shame, just like you were saying, it seems like they're going almost deliberately against what he's best.
SPEAKER_02It's against the grain. They're not cutting with the grain.
SPEAKER_06I have two theories. One is he and Richie, they're buds, they're like, let's try something different together, because we trust each other as friends and artists. All right, let's do a somber one. Or someone else was supposed to play this role. And I don't know which one it is, but yeah, it is pretty wild. And oh, okay, I gotta talk about Dana because one thing that really got to me, you know who she, you were there. I was cursing, is that there's one woman in the full movie, basically.
SPEAKER_02She is uh the most poorly written character in the entire movie.
SPEAKER_06First her character traits are ooh wee, new man, and gun shooting. That's what you got. So there's this moment where she and he sleep together, and basically immediately this asshole interrogates her at gunpoint. She gets up out of bed being like, Oh, you're in the living room, how are you? And he's like, pow, shoots her couch, threatens her family. This is kidnapping. Fuck you, dude. She already has to deal with enough shit working in this weird ass testosterone nightmare of an armored truck company. And now the guy she slept with is holding her at gunpoint in her own house. Leave this woman alone, dude. Man, I hate it when I don't like Statham because I love Statham. But here's the deal: I know his son was killed, I know he's out for revenge, but I think that the movie wants me to look at his character and go, wow, what a badass. But I'm looking at it like this guy is a fucking dick. I was also, like you, incredibly confused. Yeah.
SPEAKER_10Okay.
SPEAKER_06I even jot it down. I wouldn't have survived this movie without you looking up through the Wikipedia.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Because it's just like at one point I thought Statham was a drug kingpin. He's not. He's just a crime guy. All right. That's what I got. Crime guy. What kind of crime? We'll never know. I kept thinking the problem was that the timeline was confusing, but then I was like, no, it's just stupid. Because if you took everything that Happened and just showed it to me in order, that would be a boring ass movie. Yeah, it would be. There's a lot of junk that they shove in this, and it's like they think splitting it up is gonna make it more tolerable and still up for it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but it's not it's not really nonlinear progression, it's employing some of the corniest stuff people normally do to kind of clash something up. You got act titles, yeah. Of course, you gotta yeah, very obscure as well. It's like a chin scratching movie rather than something that's meant to be sad and enjoy it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. So nuts. By the time you get to the final heist, oh god, I hated this. These guys had little models of all the armored trucks. I mean, they didn't know that. And then everything's perfectly labeled, and then they have miniature police cars to plan the robbery. Imagine getting raided before you attempted to do this thing. The police would be like, sir, you claim to have nothing to do with this elaborate armored truck heist. You got tiny police cars, yeah. Like police cars and perfectly scale model of the crime scene with eight miniature armored trucks are in your house. Okay, come on, guys. Just a chalkboard. That's all you need. Then the actual heist is mostly dudes in black shooting at other dudes in black in hallways. I didn't really get a sense of the geography, but I do know one thing that happened. Those motherfuckers killed Josh Hartnett. And I will not stand for that. No one can take late career Hartnett away from us. He was gone for so long. We just got out of the way.
SPEAKER_02That definitely would have caused the poo-poo.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god. Oh, oh, sushi.
SPEAKER_02People evacuate their bowels after they die, right?
SPEAKER_06No, I know. It's just science, you know. Yep, yep, yep. Oh my god. Well, now that we've talked about evacuating bowels, let's get to my rating. Uh so for enjoyment, I gave it a two to two point five two point two five to two point five out of five.
SPEAKER_02Just stick with something solid. Come on.
SPEAKER_06I'll give it a two. Like, you know, it's not in the name a two for a poo. But yeah, it's not like in the name of the king bad. If definitely not there, Josh Hartin's fun. Some of the action shot well. Statham gets a few pretty epic lines.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, and he also got to be a little bit more dramatic than usual. And I think he did do a good job with that sort of aggrieved but holding it in type of sadness. I think he did pretty decent. And for my Statham standout, my final Statham standout of Statham Temper. Wow, it's gotta go to, yeah, that incredible one-two punch sush. Jason Statham looking post Malone, dead in the eyes, saying, suck your old dick, shooting him in the forehead, turning around, walking back, so proud of himself, just looking at his frightened coworker and saying, Did you make a poo-poo? Just to really rub it in. This is a man who lost his son and is pouring some buns at women he slept with. But he also contains multitudes because he can make poo-poo jazz.
SPEAKER_02It totally seems like it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's the range of Jason State of everybody. I can think of a better way to close it out, except for watching one of the better movies.
SPEAKER_02But you know, still too bad this isn't video podcast. We play a little clip of him dancing in the erasure video.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, everyone, I need you to put it on your calendar for every year. To celebrate Statham Tember, you gotta watch the erasure video where he's dancing around in his undies. It's amazing. He's a true artist.
SPEAKER_02Uh well, let's do our Statham Tember special game.
STATHAMTEMBER "StathMan" game - with special guest host Chelsea Woodmansee
SPEAKER_06Oi! I've got a game master here! Oh my god, guys, my Statham hasn't gotten better all month. But uh, ladies and gentlemen, join us as we welcome Chelsea Woodmancy, who is our host for a fabulous Statham game. Chelsea, hello. Hello, and welcome to the Statham Games. How are you two today? Woo! I'm doing good, I'm excited.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Um, I'm excited too. I, you know, fleshed this out as much as I could. If it sucks, I don't care. I think it'll be fun because you guys are fun. So without further ado, let me introduce the game as only I can. Let's hear it.
SPEAKER_10I'm the staath man! Woo!
SPEAKER_03The stateman.
SPEAKER_07There's actually so many songs that Statham works so well in, and I can't remember the other one, but I'll I'll think of it later. So welcome to Statham. It is my version of Hangman, and I mean I really like that you guys always invite me on the pod when you have like a brooding, uh leading action man with a sexy accent.
SPEAKER_02And I just we forgot to invite you for uh leprechaunathon, unfortunately.
SPEAKER_06Oh, we really should we really should have too. That's your area of expertise. I do love a good B movie.
SPEAKER_07My husband and I watch B movies all the time, but very complimented that you think of me when you have, like I said, a brooding, raspy, uh leading action man. So thank you. So this is gonna be a hangman game based on memorable characters and quotes from Jason Statham's vast roles and many memorable movies. We'll see how many we get through. If it's not fun and it sucks, we'll stop playing. This was my first idea several weeks ago, and nothing else compared to this. So I'm sticking with it. Essentially, what you're going to do is I asked you both to have a pen and paper in front of you so you could keep track of your uh hits and misses.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_06And instead of the traditional hangman, where you know, if you guess uh a letter incorrectly, you draw the head and then the body and the arms, etc. So in Staff Man, the body's already there.
SPEAKER_07Now, when you guess a letter incorrectly, you are gonna draw on your hangman, and you can do this as crudely as you want. Maybe a picture later would be funny. You are gonna draw scruff, gun, woman in peril, fast sexy car, and oversized luxury watch.
SPEAKER_02It's gonna be tough to draw.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, and I'll be keeping track over here. So essentially, I am going to make you guess his um characters' names from specific movies. You will get a point if you can guess the character's name. You will get another point if you can guess the movie.
SPEAKER_06And then for a bonus point, I am going to text you as I started a group chat with both of you right before this podcast recording, the verbiage for the quote.
SPEAKER_07And if you would like an extra point, you can uh do your best, Jason State them. Which Ashley, we got a little taste of yours.
SPEAKER_06Uh I haven't heard sushies yet. But tell me those raspy brits, it's hard to do. Yeah, we keep going raspy. They're so good. They're so good.
SPEAKER_07Okay, so without further ado, I am gonna start you off on the first character. This will have 11 letters in the name, and that's all I'm gonna tell you. You would like to guess first, sush, go for it. Any letter, a vowel or consonant, any letter.
SPEAKER_02S for soosh.
SPEAKER_07There is an S. It is the 11th letter. Oh.
SPEAKER_06Ashley, would you like a guess? Yes. I'm going to take a cue for my co-host and go with A for Ashley. There is no A. Dun dun dun. So now we're gonna draw scruff on our hangman.
SPEAKER_01Because you know, Jason Stakeham always has that absolutely luxurious five o'clock shadow. Oh, yeah. All right, so that's I don't win this out. Okay, Sush, go ahead.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna go T for transporter.
SPEAKER_06Mmm. There is no T. Dun dun dun. Oh dang. So now you are gonna draw a gun on your staith man.
SPEAKER_02Now, is that like a rifle type gun, or are we talking like a hand?
SPEAKER_06I think it is gonna lean more rifle, but it's it can be whatever you want it to be.
SPEAKER_07I kept it really vague and just put gun, but you could do shotgun, you can do it.
SPEAKER_06There's so many options. There's so many options.
SPEAKER_03I got it. Okay.
SPEAKER_06Okay. All right. Ashley, take it away. I'm gonna go with an E. There are two E's in this name. The third one is an E. Can I guess? Can I guess? If you'd like to guess, you can. Is it Chev Cellios? You got it!
SPEAKER_12Oh my god.
SPEAKER_06Now, Ashley, yeah. Do you know what movie that's from? Well, it's from two movies, Crank and Crank to High Voltage.
SPEAKER_10Oh dang!
SPEAKER_06You got it. You got it. Oh yeah, oh yeah.
SPEAKER_07Sushi, I'm gonna give you the opportunity to gain a point here since you're two points behind. I'm gonna text you a quote and you can say it or pass. If you pass, Ashley cannot pick it up.
SPEAKER_10Right.
SPEAKER_06Oh. It's a character that he plays when he electrocutes his nipple with a battery charger.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_06See, you guys are good. All right, just text a D Sush if you want to say that in your best, Jason Statham.
SPEAKER_04I wonder how many stakes I can make out of you.
SPEAKER_01Oh that was so good. All right, that was good. Okay, so we got Ashley two points. She guessed the character and the movie.
SPEAKER_02I'm just gonna purposely screw all these up.
SPEAKER_06I know. I love your impressions. Are you ready for the next character?
SPEAKER_07Oh yeah. All right. Okay, so the next character is eight letters. And Sush, since you are not in the lead, you can pick first.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna go with L for loser.
SPEAKER_07Whoa. And that was a good choice because you are a loser in this scenario. There is no L. Oh, damn. So we're gonna draw scruff on our staath man. I love what you guys make. Sound in unison. It sounds like you know that old S and L sketch with a delicious dish?
SPEAKER_10Yes.
SPEAKER_07That sounds really good, Terry. Yes. Shwaty balls? Shweti balls. Okay, Ashley, would you like to guess a letter? Oh, I guess I'll go with E again. There is no E.
SPEAKER_06With the Bong. Okay. So I have a gun. Pew pew pew. I'm so bad at guns. No, it's nice. This one I picked a dumb, silly game. You're all good. I like it. Okay, so you should go for it.
SPEAKER_02Uh, I'm gonna go with R.
SPEAKER_07That's an incredible guess because the first letter and the seventh letter are R's. Oh. Ooh. R. Do you have any thoughts about who it might be?
SPEAKER_04Uh no.
SPEAKER_07Okay. That was incredible, though.
SPEAKER_06All right, Ashley, take it away. Okay. Um, P. There is no P. Wow. So now we're gonna add uh for the first time, woman in peril or a WIP.
SPEAKER_07I've just been drawing her when I've done practice rounds in his other hand because he's always saving a damsel in distress. Oh yeah. You can draw just boobies, you can draw another stick person with hair, you can do whatever you want.
SPEAKER_06It's your woman in peril. Just do what I'll tell you what, she's gonna be probably tied up because man, in those transporter movies, those women go through it.
SPEAKER_07I know he thinks they have sex with him, which I think is so funny. Okay, uh leave this susha's turn.
SPEAKER_12I'm gonna go with F for Frank Martin.
SPEAKER_07Now that's an incredible guess because fifth letter is an F.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I think I know what this is.
SPEAKER_07Would you like to guess?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's Rick Ford from the movie Spy.
SPEAKER_06Oh, that's a good one. That's one of my favorite Stathams, man. Yeah. And I really like this quote.
SPEAKER_07I mean, there's a bunch before it, but I had to kind of pare it down because I didn't want to give somebody a huge paragraph. But Ashley, I'm gonna text this to you and you have the opportunity to do a Jason Statham impersonation to gain gain a point here in Miss Rand.
SPEAKER_01Um take it away, Ashley. During the threat of an assassination. Oh my god, guys, this is terrible. During the threat of an assassination attempt, I appeared Oh my god. I appeared convincingly in front of Congress as Barack Obama.
SPEAKER_06Wait, okay. Let me just say it in a normal voice so you can appreciate the line. During the threat of an assassination attempt, I appeared convincingly in front of Congress as Barack Obama. Guys, I can't see.
SPEAKER_07I'm actually gonna give you a half a point for that impersonation because you tried really hard.
SPEAKER_02I will agree to another half point if she does her impression of Chris Tucker in Rush Hour.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah. Well, oh, I will accept that. It's unfortunate because you can't see what I'm doing with my hands and my fingers, but I'm gonna tell you about it. They're outstretched, sort of in a T pattern, and then I'm sort of doing a gimme, a gimme with my fingies. And uh do you understand the words coming out of my mouth?
SPEAKER_02Oh shit. Bryce Tucker is like in the room with me right now.
SPEAKER_06He's a genius. I'm so jealous that you're both with each other in such magnificence. Oh my god. Oh, okay. Ashley, that is a full point that you get. Thank you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01How much one do I want to do next?
SPEAKER_07I think I'll do. I feel like that one might be too easy. But you know what? This game is not about punishing you both, so we can keep it in.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_07The next one is only eight letters long. And I believe you guys are tied.
SPEAKER_06So I'm gonna say, Ashley, because you endured a really tough impersonation, you can go first and pick a letter. I'm gonna go with a K. There is no K. B.
SPEAKER_11It's no K.
SPEAKER_06Some scruff to our staath man. Damn it. Okay, Sush. Getting very scruffy.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna go with S again as Sam.
SPEAKER_06There is no S. Oh damn. I such a couple of things. Now we're gonna add a gun. Pew pew pew. Oh, I just realized I have been doing this as if there was one State Man, but there should have been many. So I'm just gonna.
SPEAKER_02He has a full beard.
SPEAKER_06He actually does. Yes. And so I'm just gonna go with it. I'm gonna have him have a gun on his own. The way that you keep track on your score sheet is up to you. I'm the game master, so I'm keeping score of everybody's. Okay. He's got a foot gun.
SPEAKER_07Oh man. Oh, you guys have to send me pictures of your stafans later. Um, okay, so there is no K and there is no S's in Sam. Ashley, it's to you. I'm gonna go A. There are three A's in this name. There's an A in for letter number one, three, and seven.
SPEAKER_05What Alan?
SPEAKER_11Oh no.
SPEAKER_05What?
SPEAKER_07I I thought this one would be a dead giveaway, so let's go to Sush. What's your guess?
SPEAKER_03Let's do a D?
SPEAKER_06Oh there is one D and it is the second letter. I still don't know what it is, but uh I I'm gonna go with an M. An M as in mother. Yeah. That is the fourth letter. I had a suspicion. Now, what's that dang last name? Sush, what do you got?
SPEAKER_03Uh let's do P.
SPEAKER_07There is no P, so we're gonna add a woman in peril to our stateman.
SPEAKER_06Now it sounds like one of you might know what the movie is, and you might not remember the name of the character. Is that correct? I just know the name Adam exists.
SPEAKER_02I don't know what the character would be based on this.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so now Ashley, it's back to you. Okay. Uh E? There are no E's. So for the first time ever, we are adding a fast, sexy car. You can put this anywhere you like on your staith, man.
SPEAKER_10Oh.
SPEAKER_01I don't know what cars. Yeah, I just draw like a general blob with a couple of other blobs for tires.
SPEAKER_10It's gonna be one of those Amazon tricks.
SPEAKER_07That's all I can do. It's a box track. Yeah, however you want to cross back. Nice.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Very nice. I really thought that this would be one that you guys would get really quickly, and I debated uh doom, but I'm glad I could. Yeah, okay. Um, Ashley guessed E, so it's Sushi's turn.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, let's go with uh B as in boy.
SPEAKER_01No B, you killed the staith man! Oh no, he gets an oversized luxury watch and then dies tragically.
SPEAKER_07So do you guys want to try and guess what it is before I tell you?
SPEAKER_12No, I have no idea what it is.
SPEAKER_06I don't know either. It is Adam Clay from The Beekeeper.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god. That's all I know is we didn't know his name. We just knew him as the beekeeper.
SPEAKER_06I just know him as the beekeeper. I protect the hive. That's that's the best I can do, guys. I felt like I wanted to try it, and I thought, wow, I'm really gonna show them now, but yeah, it's about the same. On that note, speaking of the quotes, I'm gonna send this quote in the group chat. Nominate you to do it, sushi, even though maybe I lost it, or do I have to do it again?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Well, I killed the staith man.
SPEAKER_06Oh, that's right. Okay.
SPEAKER_07I think I'm gonna have Sush do this one because Ashley did the last one. Or you can have a quote off if you'd like, but I'm gonna ask Sush to do this one. Yeah, do it.
SPEAKER_04Hold on, let me get right. Nobody's untouchable. Sometimes when the hive's out of balance, you have to replace the queen.
SPEAKER_06I felt that in my soul. Hell yeah. Guys, what those scammers did to Felicia Rashad is unforgivable. I still can't get over that. Wait, what happened? They scammed her. She was an old lady and they scammed her. I don't know who Felicia Rashad is, but like, how did they scam her? What happened? They got her to give money from a charity she worked at because she thought she was making a payment, but then they just stole her money. Oh no, I love her so much. That's such a bummer. I know. But don't worry, he got vengeance.
SPEAKER_07Guys, all proceeds raised from this podcast will go towards supporting Felicia Rashad.
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean, her character died in the movie, so you won't be able to do that.
SPEAKER_06Like a memorial beekeeping facility.
SPEAKER_10Her character.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Oh my god. So that was three rounds.
SPEAKER_07Okay, so the next one is going to be 12 letters.
SPEAKER_11Oh, damn, that's so many letters.
SPEAKER_07Since Sush got an extra point for doing the quote, Ashley, I'm gonna look to you first.
SPEAKER_06I'm gonna say P. The very last letter, number 12, is a P. Eh, boy. I just decided last minute to do a yeah boy.
SPEAKER_11Yeah, boy. I'm gonna go with an R.
SPEAKER_06There are two R's.
SPEAKER_07It is the second letter and the sixth letter.
SPEAKER_06Okay. I'm gonna go with Oh, there is one O, and it is the 11th letter. I love that there's so many letters, so I don't get as many wrong. The odds are actually quite good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_11Uh I'm gonna go with an M as in Mary.
SPEAKER_07There are no M's. Faith Man's getting some scruff. One ticket to Scruff Town. Scruff Town.
SPEAKER_06That should be a Statham movie. Mmm. Okay, I'm gonna go with S for Statham. There is one S and it is the ninth letter. Alright. Looking good, guys. Sush, what do you think?
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna go with a T.
SPEAKER_06There is one T and it is the third letter.
SPEAKER_11Huh. Third letter.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_06Okay. I'm gonna go with L. There are no L's.
SPEAKER_11No L's.
SPEAKER_06No! Old Stacey's getting a pew pew. Oh my god. Pews and it looks kind of like alien movies in the 50s. Actually, I'm gonna turn it into that. It's a space gun.
SPEAKER_07I really, really am gonna need to see a picture of this lady.
SPEAKER_11Oh, I think I know what this is.
SPEAKER_07Oh well, do you want to use your turn to guess, or would you like to guess a letter first?
SPEAKER_02You know what? I'll guess a letter just to make sure that I know what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_07That's fun.
SPEAKER_02Uh let me get an A on that.
SPEAKER_07There is one A and it is at the very beginning.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_05What kind of name is this?
SPEAKER_07Oh, this is fun. This is more fun than I than I am. Glad this is working out. Glad this is working out.
SPEAKER_06I guess the name is art. But after that, I just do not know. I'm gonna go with um C. There are no C's! Pepper Bam. So we're gonna add a woman in peril to our staith man. My woman in peril, it's very jugs forward. Oh. Because we just watch The Transporter, it's just like a woman in a garbage bag.
SPEAKER_10That's oh my god.
SPEAKER_06Because that's like basically what she is in the beginning, duck in a bag.
SPEAKER_07For those of you that don't know, myself, Ashley, and another friend have a group chat, and the title of the group chat is Gratuitous Girls because we watch a lot of action and horror movies. So for Ashley to say something like that is really not uncommon. You know, she's in peril. She's in peril, man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Okay, so we have no M, no L, no C, and I believe it is Susha's turn to guess.
SPEAKER_12Um let's do B.
SPEAKER_06There is a B, and it is the seventh letter.
SPEAKER_10Okay.
SPEAKER_06Oh, well. Oh. Do you think you know it, Ashley? No.
SPEAKER_10Okay.
SPEAKER_06I mean, I think I know components of it, not like, oh, it's that guy. I'm more like letters made names, and I know what names are made from certain letters kind of way. Yeah. If you think you know the name, you can guess the name.
SPEAKER_02Nah.
SPEAKER_06So she got it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I got the name, I think.
SPEAKER_06What do you got? Okay, what is it, Sushi?
SPEAKER_02Is it Arthur Bishop?
SPEAKER_06Woo! You got it. My god. I forgot that art isn't the only name that starts with art.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man. It's like a short version of Arthur.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god. Is that bank job? Which one's that?
SPEAKER_12Oh, wait.
SPEAKER_06You have to guess the character. Do you want to try and guess the movie?
SPEAKER_12I don't know. I don't know the movie.
SPEAKER_01Ashley, do you have any idea? I was gonna guess uh the bank job. It is the mechanic.
SPEAKER_10Oh, such a good one.
SPEAKER_06Uh I know. His name should just be mechanic or beekeeper. I mean, that's what they usually call it. Yeah, basically, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, Ashley, you have an opportunity to earn a point here since you didn't win any in this round. I've sent a quote to the group chat.
SPEAKER_06And if you would like to give that your best, put your stank on that statum. I'm making a face to do this. I feel like maybe if I'm sneering, let's see. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.
SPEAKER_05I got distracted and then I couldn't read, but that was way better. Wait, good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. He became Australian.
SPEAKER_01I'm so sorry. I've let everyone down. You know what? It's just so hard with a raspy gentleman. You and I both end up sounding exactly like we did when uh when we did Jerry Wherry.
SPEAKER_05So it's just like uh let me tally up the totals here really quick.
SPEAKER_07All right. Ashley came in second with four points, and sushi is in the lead with five.
SPEAKER_10Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_06So I while we don't have a tiebreaker situation, we could play one more round or we can take our wins and losses.
SPEAKER_12I'm I'm okay with one more. Let's find out.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, me too. Yeah, you guys want to do one more? All right. Last Hember comes but once a year. So I know. Oh, I'm so excited to like listen to all the Statham episodes. I didn't listen to any because I didn't want to be influenced. I love your process and your method.
SPEAKER_05I respect thank you.
SPEAKER_06Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_07The very final round has 10 letters. And sushi, since you're in the lead, I'm gonna have Ashley go first.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_07There is no A.
SPEAKER_06B. What? Yeah, put some scruff on the state, man. All right, scruffin'em up.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna go with S for state them.
SPEAKER_06There is no S. We got the gun already. The scruff and the gun that came quick. Ashley. Sorry, I got distracted by drawing my gun. It's really weird. Um I sincerely can't wait to see your state there. You know, I'm gonna go with G for gun.
SPEAKER_05There is a G. Ooh. And it is the eighth letter. All right. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_12I'm gonna go with the P.
SPEAKER_06There is no P. No. Woman in Peril. The key for peril for the woman in peril. I'm just gonna be thinking about as your trash bag lady while I'm over here drawing big old hooters on mine. Well, this one, she's gonna be just really small. So she's in peril because someone might step on her.
SPEAKER_02I don't even know what's happening with mine, so looks like some circles and a half circle.
SPEAKER_06Oh, is it me next? I'm gonna go F. F is in Frank. Yeah. There is no F.
SPEAKER_10God damn it.
SPEAKER_06I know. So now you gotta add a fast, sexy car to your staf man.
SPEAKER_07It was me trying to do the scat man at and go for whoo. I like it.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I'm gonna do an Amazon berry. Oh no.
SPEAKER_01So you will add an oversized luxury watch to your staf man, and that is the round. Oh man.
SPEAKER_10Damn.
SPEAKER_07Now, Ashley, since you are not well, then this, I guess this would result in a tie if I did this, but we'll see what happens. Um, I'm gonna send a quote to the group chat. Ashley, you have a chance to match sushi's points, or sushi, you have a chance to get even more in the lead.
SPEAKER_06It's up to you both, and choose a way. I think you should do it, sushi, just for the entertainment of the people. I think that's a good call.
SPEAKER_03There's a nice school for gifted children up in Seattle. It's a nice drive if you like trees and shit.
SPEAKER_06So that is from the character Luke Wright from the movie Safe.
SPEAKER_12Wow.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, I never would have gotten Luke Wright from that. Again, I just can picture him on the post.
SPEAKER_12We were Luke wrong on that.
SPEAKER_10You were Luke wrong about Luke Wright.
SPEAKER_07Well, I'm gonna have to say that Sushi won with six points. Ashley, we're close with four. Thank you guys so much for being such good sports.
SPEAKER_02I know that was kind of a weird game to play, but uh with another celebratory game.
SPEAKER_06It was fantastic. And it would definitely you guys have a scruffy leading man, just keep me in mind. Hell yeah. Thank you again, Chelsea. Do you have anything you would like to plug from your creative endeavors? You know, I've got a lot of things up and coming. You can follow me on Instagram.
SPEAKER_07My handle is at eyeball junkyard, all lowercase, all one word. Um, I made that name when I first joined Instagram because somebody forced me to join Instagram.
SPEAKER_06I didn't really think about the longevity. It's kind of like when you pick your email address when you're 12 and then you give it to somebody and you're like sparkle, glitter, stars. I love it.
SPEAKER_07Anyway, yeah, I've got some cool things coming in the works. I'm working on documentary, I'm working on putting on a live show, and I've resuscitated my comedy career from death.
SPEAKER_06So I will be putting some things up there, but thank you guys so much for having me. No problem. Thank you. And I think we should all thank Statham, you know. Thank you, Stacem. Thank you, Statham. Welcome. Um he's the statesman. Oh, also have you seen him go-go dancing?
SPEAKER_02Oh, you weren't aware of this?
SPEAKER_06He is dancing in his undies on two separate music videos and one like an animal print thing. Yep, and one of them googling that the moment we hang up. Chelsea, one of them's an erasure song.
SPEAKER_02He's all greased up.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, yeah. What is happening? What was it for?
SPEAKER_07That's all it was for.
SPEAKER_06He was just a hunky man on the go in England, and uh, they just put him in some skivvies and threw him up there. Yeah, wow. I like everything about this way.
SPEAKER_07Honestly, and all the research I did when I was figuring out different games, because I was like, I could go trivia, I could go like blah, blah, blah but I wanted it to be things you could actually guess, not just super hard trivia where you're like, I don't have any fucking clue.
SPEAKER_06Why would we waste our time with this?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we know all the weird stuff about right, exactly.
SPEAKER_06I know you too, and I'm like, they're gonna know all the weird stuff. But it made me just fall more in love with Jason Statham. I love him so much, and the more I was researching, I was like, Oh, I just want a great man.
SPEAKER_07So happy he's doing what he's doing.
SPEAKER_06All right, thank you. See you soon.
NEW Movie Review: Resident Evil (2026)
SPEAKER_06Next up is Resident Evil, the latest movie from weapons director Zach Crager. Austin Abrams plays Brian, a medical courier who takes one extra job and ends up driving straight into Raccoon City, which still sounds to me like a bunch of raccoons who took over a trash can and refused to move out. I don't know. That's just what I picture in my head. Anyway, Austin Abrams basically doesn't have any co-stars in this. It's him, a bunch of infected people turned into gooey yucky monster things, and occasionally recognizable person or two pops up for a few minutes. Then between this, I realized runner and the transporter. Sushi, this has been a big month for us for transporting things. Oh yeah. Well, transporting happened. Yeah, absolutely. So, Sush, what'd you think of this one?
SPEAKER_02Well, first off, this movie lost out on a great opportunity to utilize uh Jimothy.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god.
SPEAKER_02Raccoon City. So we could have had just a little cameo with Jimothy, but they didn't do that.
SPEAKER_06So I want to live in a city of Jimothys. What a dream.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, as a gamer, I was never a follower or fan of the Resident Evil franchise, but I've had at least some awareness of the game since the mid to late 90s, simply due to the game series establishing survival horror as a new video game genre. Actually, kind of a funny story tied to Resident Evil the video game. Um there's an inside joke between my friends and I, and it kind of happened because I showed up at my friend's house one time and his roommates were in the dark playing one of the earlier Resident Evil games. And I just remember coming in as one of the zombie dogs was attacking. Obviously, it's a very tense environment when you're playing these games, and I was just like, oh, who let the dogs out? Just forever. My friend who was playing that game, she could never come up to me again from that moment on without first saying who let the dogs out every time. Oh my god. So I mean just one thing to add to this whole story. But anyway, admittedly, I mostly know Resident Evil from the Paul W.S. Anderson film series, they're Mila Yovovic that spanned over a decade. Uh, pretty sure I've seen all those movies, though I can't remember the exact plot nor order of the movies following Resident Evil Apocalypse, uh, which was the second, I think, out of the six movies. Another fun fact, I always assumed that two of them, Anderson and Yovovich, got together early on. Like they put out six of those movies between 2002 to 2016. I always just assume they got married after the first one or something. Yeah. Actually, I guess Anderson proposed to Jovovich following the first Resident Evil movie they made together. Oh. But they were imparably uh engaged on and off for four years. Oh wow. And didn't officially become a couple until 2007 and weren't even married until 2009. Uh, for context, that wasn't until after the third of those movies they made. Oh my gosh, which was 2007's Resident Evil Extinction. Sometimes you think in Hollywood courtship doesn't take very long, but it's an uh uh very much the opposite situation going on here. Wow, they had to make three movies before this really solidified. Uh, other than those movies, I've just seen the 2022 Netflix live action series. I personally thought it was okay, but I know that it wasn't well received by audiences nor critics. And I'm aware of the live action reboot that came out in 2021 with Robbie ML, but I never got around to seeing that as far as this movie goes. I had no idea it was even in the works and pretty much just found out about it when the teaser trailer came out in theater. Right, yeah. I actually remember that I didn't remember that this was a new Resident Evil movie because I saw either the full trailer or the teaser again a few weeks later and completely forgot. I think I even remember saying to you, oh, that's right, they're making a new Resident Evil movie.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But then I remember the premise didn't seem to give the impression that it was closely adapting the games in any way. Not a big deal to me though, given that I wasn't really that close to the franchise. Plus, we both loved Weapons, which Zach Kregor also directed, and we thought Austin Abrams was hilarious in that movie, too. So I was pretty sure I was gonna see this. Seeing the movie, I certainly feel like there's no mistake that Kreger directed this film. Oh, yeah. It really did seem to have the same great sense of balance between horror and comedy that I experience with weapons. Uh I feel like most horror comedies never go as far with the horror as they do with the comedy. But this movie, like weapons, is really well balanced between the two. The horror does not feel at all limited by the fact that it has to kind of share the screen with the comedy. So in a way, I feel like this movie was an extended work based on what we kind of already got between Kregger and actor Austin Abrams in that movie, too. Um, so while I'm talking about that, I might as well just move on to the cast. Ah, yeah. And that's pretty much just Austin Abrams.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, that boy can scream.
SPEAKER_09Oh my god!
SPEAKER_02I did not know. But it's so high junkie in weapons, so I guess that explains him being void of emotion or at least not really reacting how non-addicts would in moments in that movie. But man, he was full on hilarious in this movie. Yeah, and I know sometimes I can find something that some people still might find legitimately horrible or sad as being hilarious by zeroing in on some aspect that seems exaggerated, but I honestly don't think that's the case with him in this movie.
SPEAKER_09Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_02The guy just has some legitimately hilarious moments that I think are just down to his delivery, or because he does seem to genuinely focus on something he really shouldn't be given his situation. The funny part is that's pretty much the only person that I think I should even mention. So I don't want to explain what I mean by that any further, even. All I could really say, I guess, as far as the cast goes, since he was in a trailer, Paul Walter Hauser is as amusing as you'd probably expect him to be in something like this, though I can't say his role in this is probably one of the more serious characters he's played. Comparison, definitely more serious than his character in Cobra Kai. But I think the aspect of this movie that's going to be most impressive to most people is the design.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02The earliest elements that are showcased that really caught my attention was probably the cinematography and lighting. I think I watched a recent interview with Krager where he talked about how he was always trying to keep the camera focused on larger or typically dark spaces instead of smaller enclosed spaces because he believed it presented much more fear due to not only the unknown, but just the idea of what could be the space. What I find really interesting about him choosing to prioritize these types of shots is that there's also this weird claustrophobia that comes with how much of the darkness consumes some of the shots in this movie, too.
SPEAKER_09Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, it's just really great cinematography and accompanying use of light carrying through the entirety of this. Like even when the movie seems to get brighter later on, it still has a very specific impact on the feel of the movie.
SPEAKER_06Definitely.
SPEAKER_02Um pretty closely tied is the score. Even though the music itself is pretty standard fair horror movie score as far as the composition goes, there's a really faithful application of it as far as emphasizing the horror elements of this movie. In fact, it actually adheres to it pretty strictly since I remember most, if not all, the obviously funny moments in this movie seem to be void of any music. Like it just cuts out.
SPEAKER_06Oh, interesting.
SPEAKER_02I think the last element, as far as the design goes, that's also kind of tied to the ones I mentioned so far, was the set design. There's a lot of great use of space and objects to create fear, both using dark or poorly lit, vast open settings and well-lit enclosed rooms and hallways and other indoor spaces, kind of like I was saying before. As far as practical effects go, I thought they were really good in this movie, especially given all this kind of thought of Resident Evil as leaning more towards sci-fi rather than gory compared to other zombie-based movies or video games. Weirdly, given that association, there were definitely some moments in this movie where I thought the VFX were a bit uncanny bally.
SPEAKER_09Oh. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But overall, the VFX seemed to be used fairly sparsely, so I think that probably why they didn't bother me as much in the end. So for my ratings, I gave this a four for enjoyment and a four for quality. Oh I had a great time seeing this movie. I know it's being pitched more as a pure horror or horror action movie, but I really felt that with Austin Abrams being the lead in this and Krager directing him again, this movie ended up being one of the best horror comedy movies I've ever seen. I really only deducted a point from my enjoyment score because it seemed to have pretty loose rules and never really provides details on how the infection or mutation kind of works, which I would have been able to look past, but couldn't in this movie because one of the characters points out something isn't occurring with some of the infected, which I feel either deserved further clarification or should have just been cut out of the movie completely. Beyond that, I also feel like the tone and the pacing early on in the movie felt a bit uneven and unsure, I guess. The best way to describe it is that it took me a while to really understand this. World, I suppose, where this movie would settle into. While initially wanted to give this movie a lower quality rating due to what seemed like some backpedaling on Zach Krager's part. Basically, for anybody who is unaware leading up to this movie being released, when Zack Krager was interviewed in August 2025, he said he wasn't interested in featuring any characters from the games. But then after some backlash, it seemed like he started mentioning that his movie would instead be another story that could be happening in parallel to the events of Resident Evil 2. After seeing the movie, I came across an IGN interview with him in the month following the quote in August. Where he admitted that he was naive, since being a fan of the games himself, he assumed other fans would want someone to turn Resident Evil into a survival horror movie.
SPEAKER_11Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_02So that kind of changed my mind. Um, I think as somebody who's been a gamer for decades, kind of like how I was a comic book fan for decades before movies started being adapted. I understand how fans of the original medium would be protective over it and want movies that at least seem to care enough to pay some sort of tribute to them. Especially if you're not going to really try to adapt any existing stories from it. Based on what Crager initially said, regardless of how he intended it, it could have been taken as something like, I don't care to adapt anything but the vibe from this game, and I was gonna make a movie with the same vibe regardless of whether or not I was able to land the Resident Evil IP. On the other hand, as somebody who just loves movies in general, I get his desire to make something different after all the previous attempts. Uh, first with the Anderson Jovovich movie series adapting only some elements from the games for over a decade, followed by the reboot Resident Evil Welcome to Raccoon City, that I haven't personally seen, but apparently made a decent attempt at more closely adapting the story from the games, but still, unfortunately, only found moderate success. Some people say it's due to lack of budget or overall commitment from the studio, but ultimately it didn't appeal to longtime fans of the games. Just doesn't seem like there's been a way to satisfy everyone. So ultimately, even though I do consider how well or poorly a movie is adapted from another medium as part of my quality ratings most of the time when it applies to a given movie, I feel like Resident Evil hasn't dealt with the same situation as other video game franchises, like Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, nor Mortal Kombat, where it seemed like it only took the right formula, I guess, to provide success for those adaptations. I guess you can argue that the last reboot could have fixed that with a larger budget, but it still didn't get it quite right. So, you know, what is the ideal way to adapt the specific IP? I honestly feel like at least for Resident Evil, Krager has kind of figured out what works. And it's to preserve the survival horror angle and tone from the games while presenting something that might not include as many of the characters or specific police or military teams that were included in the games or earlier movies. So I suppose the question is whether he's going to do any sequels to this. And if that happens, maybe we'll get a better idea at what that could mean for a potential booby franchise moving forward. But I'd honestly be totally fine with this being the only Resident Evil movie he ever makes. And I say that as praise for how good this single movie is on its own. As far as related recommendations, what the hell, man? Watch the 2002 Resident Evil movie from Paul W. S. Anderson starring Mila Yovovic. It wasn't bad at all. And if anything, it was a pretty solid suspense film, even for someone who wasn't into horror at the time. I think that over the course of this series of Resident Evil movies, uh the increasing absurdity and over-the-top action were what kept me coming back. So if you like bad sci-fi action movies and haven't seen any of them, especially the later ones, it might be worth it to revisit them too. But yeah, what'd you think about this Resident Evil movie?
SPEAKER_06I mean, I thought it was great. I was constantly, repeatedly screaming and then laughing. Not just because I had screamed, because sometimes screaming is funny, but it's like the scares themselves were funny. It would build all this tension, show me something horrifying, and then somehow, yeah, that same thing would make me laugh. Okay. I adore girly pop horror comedy like freaky and happy death day. Those are two of my faves. But this, when I'm talking horror comedy, it's a whole different thing. Because even though it was funny, it was equally even more terrifying. So I was sitting there with my fists literally clenched, scanning the background, like getting on a magnifying glass, looking in the corners, what's coming at me next. Oh my gosh. You know, but then whatever insane shit would happen, yeah, it it would terrify me. And then I would laugh and laugh and laugh.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Amazing. That is such a great movie watching experience, and even more so in the theater. And I have to say, unlike you, I do not know anything about Resident Evil games.
SPEAKER_02It almost works better that way.
SPEAKER_06I think it might. Yeah. Because I I went into it with absolutely no expectations. I remember the Mila Jovovich movies. I think we watched a couple recently, but they didn't leave a big impression on me.
SPEAKER_02Sci-fi action movies that are basically just setups for a lot of cool slow-mo uh VFX shots.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it would be a good sleepy streamy, I think, one or two of those.
SPEAKER_02The darker ones, because some of them are kind of very bright. There's the one that happens in the desert, I think. That one's pretty brightly lit, but definitely the first one because there's a lot of dark scenes in that one.
SPEAKER_06So love it. And oh my god, I love that our lead character Brian is portrayed basically like a glorified Uber Eats driver for organs, even before he reaches Raccoon City. This man is at capacity. He's overwhelmed. Yeah, he absolutely is at his limit. He's overwhelmed just by seeing people in the hospital with cuts. And you're like, oh, if that has you scared, just wait, buddy. And in the meantime, he's trying to have a serious conversation with his girlfriend who really needs an answer from him, but he's chasing people down, and he says he's gonna go home, but he gets offered a delivery he can't refuse because he gets paid by the job and they said they'll pay double and he needs the money. So we're already having a bad day. And then Raccoon City started raining zombies. That's kind of his trajectory. I love that. And everybody likes to imagine that they'd survive a zombie apocalypse. That was a whole thing people talked about. But I think they feel confident about it because everyone in zombie movies is so capable and they really know what's going on. But this guy, Brian, he is in no way prepared for this shitstorm. There were so many times where he would just be completely in shock standing there staring at something horrible. And I want to get up out of my seat and be like, move, don't sit there, get out. But what are you gonna do?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man, his flabers are gasted.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he's in shock, like medical shock. I'm convinced of it at some points. But I think that's what the movie gets so right. It shows fear in a way that's seems realistic for a situation that's unrealistic. Like Brian, if I am lucky, he's who I would be in this situation. But I would definitely be screaming, I'd be complaining, I'd be going, Are you shitting me? I can't believe this. And I love that he never becomes this action hero. Over the course of the movie, he figures out a few things about how the infected work and makes some smart moves here and there, but everything he does is messy, almost literally. By the end, I wouldn't say he's a capable protagonist. Oh, I would say it's more like he's just so fucking pissed and fed up. He's still terrified, but he's just had enough. Yeah, Austin Abrams just makes all that feel so real. His high-pitched screams. Oh my god. Oh my god. I felt that. I was like, that would be me. Yeah, he's terrified, like terrified, terrified. And when he finally gets the upper hand in Imer two, if this was diehard, he'd have some cool ass John McClain line. Instead, he basically just mutters under his breath about how they're idiots. He's very relatable. He's just bitching at these things, and that's honestly what I would be doing. I love that it's almost impossible to get bored watching this movie because something is happening constantly. There's always this fear of seeing more insane shit. And then the score is very weird. It's got strange repetition. Like you were saying, the timing is very interesting of when it's there, when it isn't. And the movie starts fairly grounded. It's literally a guy in a hospital having a serious conversation with his girlfriend while working. That could be happening anywhere right now. But then it just keeps getting wow wilder and wilder. And at the end, it's like you're watching a movie in a different genre. I love movies that compound on themselves like that. It builds everything up enough that the ending makes sense, even if it's fucking nuts. This movie, when people see the whole thing, I think there's definitely going to be parts where people are like, oh, that's not what I saw coming. And I think that's really cool because when they see a good movie with a lot of knowledge of its genre, it can be easy for them to pay homage and do things in an expected way. And for me at least, it definitely didn't turn out how I expected. So I really liked it for enjoyment. I gave it a four. I loved it. Fun theatrical experience. For quality, also a four. I think the effects look great, except for maybe a couple things near the end. The pace is good. I I actually liked the slow buildup in the beginning. And then it really takes off. And I I think overall, I just love how it balances those scares with the comedy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like I was saying, the fact that it doesn't limit it in any way is a big plus. Because I really do feel like uh when people say horror comedy, they really mean like comedy horror.
SPEAKER_06Right, right, right. But this is horror comedy, yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's even it's like 50-50 horror comedy, maybe even heavier on the horror, but yeah, really cool stuff. Yeah, great movie.
SPEAKER_06Oh, and a quality enjoyment award.
SPEAKER_02Yes, that is. There you go.
SPEAKER_06D do the award is yours.
SPEAKER_02Quality enjoyment. Hope to see more Austin Abrams and Zach Kregger in the world. Yeah, me too. Honestly, I just watch a movie with him doing comedy.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Zach Krager, since directing, I guess, hasn't done comedy. Yeah. I know that I used to see him on Whitest Kids You Know, but Oh, right. Yeah, I think it would work a modern comedy movie having Austin Abrams in it. Just normal, everyday guy stuff. Just a movie of disappointment, kind of like this one. Except, you know, not as serious, obviously.
SPEAKER_09Right. Oh man. Yeah. What a wild movie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
TV Episode Recap: Lanterns - Season 1, Episode 6 - "Bad Optics"
SPEAKER_06Hey Sush.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_06You know, what kind of a Green Lantern do you think Jason Statham would be?
SPEAKER_02Probably be more along the lines of the Jon Stewart. At least for transporter, he's got the rules and everything.
SPEAKER_06Oh yeah. Regimented, disciplined. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's how it would be.
SPEAKER_06But also, he can kick some ass if he needs to.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I wonder what kind of constructs it would make. That's the thing. He wouldn't even need constructs, right? Because he's so good about using the environment and found objects.
SPEAKER_06I think it should just be uh his legs kicking, just disembodied legs kicking, floating through the air. You know what it would be? It would be like that inflatable version of him that they sent down the Thames to promote mutiny.
SPEAKER_12Well, yeah, that would be pretty good.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, yeah, obviously. Well, that's a pretty good lead-in for lanterns. We're on season one, episode six, titled Bad Optics.
SPEAKER_05Ooh.
SPEAKER_02In 2026, 10 years after the destruction of Rushville, Jon Stewart has left the Green Lantern Corps behind and become an architect, working alongside his brother, Marcus, at Stewart Brothers. John pitches Midway City officials on a network of enormous underground emergency shelters. The officials respond favorably, but explain that final approval rests with Colonel Dracot. Shortly afterward, John receives a call from his mother, Bernadette, who reveals that she has remained in contact with Hal Jordan during his 10 years in prison. She claims that Hal has returned to Rushville and wants to apologize. John drives to Rushville and finds Hal at the local giner. It soon becomes clear that Bernadette misrepresented the situation because Hal has no intentions of apologizing. Hal argues that he served prison time for both men's actions and considers their debt settled. Their conversation becomes increasingly hostile as Hal accuses John of being a killer and suggests that John rejected the Green Lantern ring because he was afraid. Yikes. In rage, John punches Hal in the face, breaking his nose. As John leaves, Hal urgently asks him not to tell anyone that they met. After John returns home, Sheriff Kane calls with devastating news. Hal has been murdered. John travels back to Rushville and joins Carrie at the football stadium where Hal's frozen body has been discovered. Carrie explains that Hal moved to town after leaving prison and repeatedly offered to help residents as part of his effort to make amends. Although most people rejected him, she also reveals that she and Hal had become romantically involved after a marriage to Billy Macon ended. Carrie gives John access to the house Hal had been renting. Following Carrie's advice, John enters through the back and discovers that the front entrance had been booby-trapped with a rifle, suggesting that Hal anticipated an attack. John remains at the house overnight, despite Marcus urging him to return for the crucial meeting with Colonel Dracott. The next morning, John meets with Carrie at the local diner and then accompanies her to the morgue. The examination shows that Hal died from a close-range 9mm gunshot to the head and was apparently facing his killer. The examiner also documents Hale's recently broken nose and a blood sample for testing, potentially placing John under suspicion once the results identify him as the person who struck Hal. Because Hal has no known family, his body is scheduled for cremation. Among Hale's possessions, John and Carrie find a key leading to a storage unit. Inside, they discover a secure vault linked to a pocket dimension. The device requires Hal's live voice, so Carrie attempts to unlock it using a recorded personal message from him. The vault recognizes the recording and refuses access, leaving its contents a mystery. Carrie invites John over for dinner, and before he leaves, John suggests uh giving Hal a proper burial, which she agrees to. Before joining Carrie for dinner, John stops at Rushville's old Green Lantern signal and switches it on. Several angry townsmen arrive and order him to turn it off, with Billy joining their confrontation. John refuses and defeats the group in the fight. Later reaches Carrie's home and has dinner with her and Noah, but the gathering is interrupted when Carrie learns about the altercation. She throws John in jail, which leads to John having an uncomfortable call to Marcus to ranch jail.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02While John's in jail, Earth's current Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, arrives to see him, responding to the Green Lantern signal. John tells Guy that Hal had been murdered. Guy initially refuses to involve himself because investigating the death of a disgraced former lantern would create, quote, bad optics. Uh John explains that he does not want Guy to solve the murder, but just wants him to get Hal's Green Lantern uniform and decommission wing so he can be buried with them. John reminds Guy that he only became Earth's lantern because he rejected the position, persuading Guy to reconsider the request. Before leaving, Guy also reveals that someone has broken Sinestro out of prison. After John is released, his other responsibilities begin collapsing. He learns that his father has been expelled from his care facility for firing a gun in his room while Marcus struggles to preserve the meeting with Colonel Dracott. John chooses to remain in Rushville, causing the business opportunity to fall apart and orders his brother Aaron to go collect their father. Back at Hal's house, Maggie, the diner waitress who witnessed John's meeting with Hal, confronts him. She demands financial compensation for the destruction caused in Rushville 10 years earlier and threatens to tell Carrie that John punched Hal shortly before his death. Although John didn't kill Hal, Maggie's knowledge gives her considerable leverage and makes his decision to conceal the diner encounter increasingly dangerous. Later at Hal's sparsely attended funeral, we see Guy and that he ultimately honored John's request. Hal lies in his coffin wearing his Green Lantern uniform and the commission ring. Carol Ferris gives John a eulogy that Hal wrote for himself years earlier. And John reads it beside the grave for Carrie and Carol. Afterward, Carrie invites John to breakfast, seemingly offering him a chance to begin moving beyond the past. That night, however, John returns to the cemetery and digs up Hal's coffin. He removes the ring from Hal's finger and puts it on, discovering that it still retains a small amount of power. John uses the remaining charge to summon Hal's sentry. The manifested sentry looks down, sees his own body in the open coffin, and realizes that he's dead.
SPEAKER_05Oh man.
SPEAKER_02And that is the end of the episode. Yeah, what'd you think about this one?
SPEAKER_06I love this episode. I mean, I love that we're finally getting to find out what was going on with Hal in the future and what he was doing in Rushville, how he died, what John's been up to, all these things that I've had questions about. That's probably the thing that I've most been curious about. What was actually happening? Then we finally get Guy Gardner. But first with John, I loved seeing this version that you can see how what he went through as a child is still fucking with his life. He's separated himself from his parents, and he seems closer with his brothers, but even that is complicated. He's bankrolling one brother's album. He and Marcus are in business together. And oh my God, they're building what's basically a fucking silo, like a series of silos. Did you notice that? Yeah. I was like, what on earth? Okay, all the shows are tying together this year. But his brothers, they grew up being told John was the chosen one. Their parents poured everything into him. So I just kind of wonder if John feels like he has to make up for that with these relationships with his brothers that he's making up for lost time or what his advantage was in his family. And then you add everything else in. You've got Zoe, the ring, Rushville, his family. Hal dying alone. I mean, pick anything. This guy has to be just racked with guilt. There are so many incredibly complicated things in his life. And his parents are not handling losing control of him very well. His dad shooting a gun at the window because John won't call him. His mom lying that Hal wants to apologize to get John back to Rushville. They are not used to this more confident and free version of John.
SPEAKER_11Right.
SPEAKER_06But I don't think that it means his mom doesn't care about Hal. I mean, she's apparently been talking to him for years. That's kind of nuts. But it also makes sense. I feel like to her, it would be like research on how to get her son ahead in some kind of way. Yeah. Um, so that was really interesting. Oh my God. And speaking of Hal, okay. I knew he and the sheriff were flirting. I really thought something was gonna happen there. So I was glad to. Okay.
SPEAKER_02What the hell? You know, I mean, Hal's like 50, so it's not as big of a deal like that.
SPEAKER_06I just think like the characters are so well written to be connected to each other.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's weird because even the way that he talks to her, it's almost like a little father-daughter-ish. Um come over, keep me company, and we can watch the game kind of thing.
SPEAKER_06Oh, I didn't get that. I just thought he talks in uh old-timey way or something.
SPEAKER_12Yes. I don't know.
SPEAKER_06But yeah, I know what you mean. It was so interesting to find out what Hal's been going through. I still have more questions, obviously, but it sounds like jail was weirdly good for him in a way, or at least what he went through. He gets out, he gets back to the town where everybody hates him, and he starts knocking on people's doors, asking what he can do to help. I mean, they tell him to fuck off, they slam doors in his face, but he just keeps knocking. So that shows you that he's had some real growth and probably taking time for introspection. That is something we didn't see in him in that younger version. And now he gets genuinely scared when he's talking to John at the diner. I was really surprised by that. The way he's like, don't tell anybody you're here. And that's the last time John sees him alive.
SPEAKER_02I have a feeling that that has something to do with why he has a booby trap at his front door.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't know if it's just because the general attitude of everybody towards him, feeling that he's kind of responsible for bringing stuff upon the town, even though it's not really his false.
SPEAKER_06I know it's so much more complicated. I'm really curious about the jail aspect of it, because I can understand how to the people of Rushville, they thought they had a good thing going, you know. So not only did they die, but that he was trying to protect them against someone who they loved. But for the rest of the world, for the law to see it that way, I'm curious. Yeah, what happened there? And oh my god, I loved Hal's ridiculous self-written eulogy. Like at first, this man envisioned the president, first lady, and the aliens were showing up to mourn him, but then he's like, I'm kind of fucking around. It was just so perfect. Then it ends with that one line that really got to me where he says, I hope I mattered.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, damn. That is I think that's how people are, though. I think that's just showing you that you know he is human regardless of how much she tries to be a space cop.
SPEAKER_06Wow. Oh my god, speaking of space cops, it's finally here. Guy Gardner, aka Space Castle has arrived.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, space castle.
SPEAKER_06Yes, I'm a filling fan, I gotta admit it. And as will point out, I recently watched all the castle episodes, then kept going with the rookie, which I call cop castle. So basically, this could be castle lanterns.
SPEAKER_02Castle Space Guy.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, like I think you know, one of the highlights of the episode is when when Guy calls Hal a shit fuck.
SPEAKER_10Yes.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, it was beautiful. That is what I want. Um, and I love how genuinely offended he is when Hal calls him a gym teacher, but yeah, he's an athletic director. He's the popist and an asshole.
SPEAKER_02But it's also hilarious because he swears like a gym teacher would, because that's how kids swear.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's true. Oh my God. I never, yeah, that is very true.
SPEAKER_02Athletic director, all you want. You're still a gym teacher in the eyes.
SPEAKER_06In the eyes of the children.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_06In the end, he gets done Hal's uniform and ring for the funeral. He did go through some trouble for him. So, you know, there's already more going on with Guy than just being a hit fuck. I don't know. I was expecting him to just be a complete asshole, but yeah, he's pretty decent. Then, oh my god, John Dicks a Hal's body? That's nuts. What the hell? It's so crazy because he's literally standing in Hal's grave, and then he takes one of the biggest business calls of his life, and then the meaning falls apart, and Marcus unloads all his resentment about John being the chosen one and basically tells him everything he you got. I didn't. Then John hangs up the phone and he just keeps digging, he just keeps going. This guy keeps going. He then takes the ring, and I was like, holy shit, this is amazing. Because John's entire childhood was engineered around becoming the Green Lantern. He came to him, he rejected it, and now he gets it from a grave. This is insane. You know? I love it. Then oh, it's so perfect. The end of the episode where we see that, I don't know, summoned for a century. Thank you. We see him there, and he just looks in the grave, looks up and is like, God damn it. Like, huh? That was such a good end to the episode. So there's a lot of highlights, I think. But I'm really curious what they're gonna do because it feels like we're almost starting a new plot here. Um but there's only two episodes left. So I don't know where we're going. What do you think, Sish?
SPEAKER_02Well, I'm definitely glad we revisited 2026. Though I'm kind of surprised that John lets himself get pulled back into all this shit with the the changes that he seemed to have made with his life since turning down the offer to be Earth Sector's next Green Lantern in the previous episode. I'm also glad we finally get Guy Gardner, obviously.
SPEAKER_06Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_02Since I would have really been frustrated if he didn't show up until like the last two episodes of the season, given how long his picture's been on the HBO Max app for this goddamn shit.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Deceptive.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, Nathan Fillion, great as Guy Gardner. It's just more the same hilarious dickhead stuff that he did in Superman. I love how he cusses like a child, like we were saying, falling hell. Oh shitfuck. Uh one of the more interesting things to me, though, from this episode is how Guy responds to John. For how much of a douchebag Guy usually is, he seems to be pretty aware and accepting of how John turning down the ring really did allow him to be where he is. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, John definitely has the right to go off on Guy, but I think he is a bit more aggressive than he really needs to be with it. Yeah. So I'm just surprised to see Guy not defend himself at all. That's true.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think it's interesting. It kind of shows you that he does care, even if he does seem like a pompous dick all the time. There's a part of him that believes in honor or like truth. Even though I definitely wasn't on board with Hal and Carrie getting together, and I know I've expressed it to you. It was kind of him to try to make things up to Rushville, even though, yeah, like I was saying, it's not entirely his fault that a manhunter just decided to seek refuge in their town, which I think is definitely more to blame for Anton and his guys attacking the town than anything Al or John did. Oh, and while I'm talking about Carrie, it's weird how okay she seems even after everything that happened to her town with the Manhunter. I mean, given how the Manhunter basically gave her a clean slate for a new life after she fled to Rushville, you'd think she'd be more devastated.
SPEAKER_06It strikes me that she's someone who thinking about being responsible for other people, that's what comes first. I feel like holding the town together is her main motivation. So maybe she hasn't had the time to process, even.
SPEAKER_02I'm pretty sure that's the case. Oh, I'm also curious what happened between her and Billy that couple of the split. Like, was it just that Carrie prioritized her job as sheriff over catering to the Macon family, or was it something else? I don't know.
SPEAKER_06Well, he does seem like he's been, for lack of a better word, radicalized when he meets him. He's become much more aggressive. So maybe that could be related to it or the cause of it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh, and goddamn, they did not cast an older actor that actually looked like Terry Christopher to play the grown-up version of Noah Macon.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Luckily, Noah is basically the only child we're introduced to in 2016 Rushville, so it wasn't too hard to figure out who he was.
SPEAKER_06He did seem like a lot older.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I mean, it's 10 years, so I guess it's a big deal. I'll also admit that I did like Shape Richard, who was the actor that played the older Noah. And I thought he at least seemed to convey the same type of innocent but not naive personality that the younger Noah seemed to also have the few times we saw him on the Making Ranch in the previous episodes. So yeah, I mean, and even though he didn't look like him, thought he did a pretty good job. I also really enjoyed John's whole journey in this episode.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02How they use it as a more natural way to fill us in on everything that's changed in his life since 2016. Obviously, he became an architect and now works with one of his brothers, designing and selling panic rooms and seems happier living that life than putting his life on the line for his parents and the guardians. So it's just crazy how quickly in this episode his parents seem to fuck up his life again.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02A part of me thinks that maybe the Guardians reached out to Bernadette and said something to make her believe that John should still be a Green Lantern. Like, if not, I don't really understand why she'd send John to go meet with Hal, because that was kind of weird. It seems like his parents have probably backed off on trying to dictate what he does with his life now that he gave it the ring, but all of a sudden his mom lies to him to get him out to Rushville to meet with Hal, and his dad's firing guns off and an assisted living. Like, why now? You've got 10 years to do that shit, so I don't know. It's just very strange with the timing. Overall, not an episode that was big on excitement, I would say, but I do like that we're revisiting the mystery angle now that the story is unfolded in Rushville. There's definitely a lot of pieces going on with the Nestro escaping, John apparently taking Hal's ring. Like, is he just doing that so he has access to the sentry, or does he actually plan on using it or even keeping it? We also got Hal's murder to figure out, and whatever else happened in Rushville and elsewhere within the past 10 years. It seems like things have gotten quieter since some secrets have been revealed. But it it still seems like there's something going on, given that you'd assume anyone who had a hatred for Hal would have taken it out on him years ago. It just seems strange that all these things are happening that have brought John back to Rushville and they're all coinciding around the same time. So yeah, just curious to see how they're going to end off this season. Like you were saying, it seems like they're building towards a new storyline, but I think it's one of those things where they're gonna give us some good setup for the following season.
SPEAKER_06Right, yeah, I could see that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, really looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_06Me too.
What We're Watching Next
SPEAKER_02Actually, what are we watching next?
SPEAKER_06Next week we're watching Primetime, where Robert Pattinson plays Chris Hansen in a to catch a predator movie. Very creepy, very A24.
SPEAKER_02Didn't Chris Hansen say that he wasn't allowed into the screening?
SPEAKER_06Yes, but he was just confused and manipulative of the press. Yeah. He just didn't want to sign an NTA to not talk about the movie. He wouldn't sign that, but he's like, they were trying to get me to sign away my life. Like, what? What are you talking about? Do you need help? Anyway, there's that. And then we're gonna check out Hachan Shake Your Booty with an exclamation point. Really looking forward to this one. It stars Rico Kakucci as a ballroom dancer, getting back onto the dance floor after a tragedy. So, you know, tissues, dancing shoes, I think a lot of laughs from the trailer. Really looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_02Cool. For TV, we'll be doing lanterns episode seven, the penalty.
SPEAKER_06Uh yes.
SPEAKER_02Of season one, as Ashley would call it.
SPEAKER_06Love a penalty.
SPEAKER_02And we did uh decide on our next show that we're going to be covering, which will be Vision Quest on Disney Plus. That's obviously Marvel Studios TV show, and that one's kicking off on the 14th of October.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So we'll have something on that episode that same week, the 16th. Because it's a Wednesday show. Cool. Yeah, looking forward to that because I haven't seen Vision forever, damn it.
SPEAKER_06I know, I love Vision.
SPEAKER_02Paul Bettany, what the hell have you been doing this whole time?
SPEAKER_06Just chilling with his cool wife.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I guess.
